The Asian Center for Media Studies

1. Background

The Asian Center for Media Studies (ACMS) was established in December 2002. The Center will develop media and media-related studies, and it aims at achieving excellence in research. Towards attaining these objectives the Center will collaborate with media organizations and academic institutions within and outside the region. The Center will also search out the latest ideas and innovations to advance the media industry in an increasingly global and technologically-driven environment.

The Asian Centre for Media Studies is currently operating out of Menara Star.

Star Publications is uniquely positioned to offer its experience, facilities, and links to develop the Center that could serve the training and research needs of print and non-print media in the region. The organisation has long been associated with education and training. Its paper, The Star, is strong in its education section. Star Publications also works closely with local universities and colleges, both private and public. It hosts university and college students on attachment programmes. It also organises regular educational fairs, mainly in Malaysia but increasingly also overseas, to give publicity and support to Malaysian colleges.Star Publications itself is involved in training and education. Its in-house training division arranges short-term courses for new and existing staff. Courses ranging from basic to advanced levels are offered to impart or to upgrade skills and proficiency of its personnel. In addition, the Star Information Centre (Staric) has substantial holding of general and media archival resources. Finally, the Star Online is a most popular web site in the country and its worldwide reach opens up another medium for training, teaching, and research. In 2001, Star Publications became a member of the IFRA Newsplex secretariat. Through this, Star Publications is associated with Newsplex's participating universities in different parts of the world. Star Publications is also a founding member of the Asia News Network. Fourteen leading newspapers in Asia are members of ANN. These links offer to Star Publications an excellent and timely opportunity to expand its training and educational programmes.

2. Our Mission The Asian Center of Media Studies seeks to promote research and advanced studies in media and media-related fields. It will work closely with universities, research institutions, and media organizations to produce graduates and other professionals who will then have practical skills and academic foundation to respond to the demands of the media industry in a globalising age and of new technological advances. The Center will also be a forum for discussions on media development. ACMS would serve as a medium for dissemination of information and sharing of research findings. At the same time it would promote cooperation and collaborative ventures among media organizations at local and international levels. These objectives could be achieved via discussions and seminars, conferences, and publications. Through this ACMS hopes to secure an Asian perspective and voice in the international media scene.
